My Story

At different moments in my life I have fancied myself a dancer. Sometimes I believed I would be a painter. For two ill-advised weeks in 2003, I was a terrible waitress. No matter what, I have returned to the written word.

My passion led me to Bard College, where I promptly fell head over heels for the history of science and flirted with theoretical physics. After poetry and novels lured me back, I got a B.A. in Languages and Literature with a concentration in creative writing. I've still got the creativity where it counts (as my eight-year-old daughter can attest, I'm handy with a glue stick and some glitter), but I didn't end up a poet or a novelist. After a detour in astrology website publishing (don't ask), I fell in love with teaching and headed to academia. I earned an M.A. in English at Brooklyn College, and a Ph.D. in English at Stony Brook University, teaching all the while. In the fall of 2019, I transitioned from full-time teaching to providing academic support to students with learning disabilities.

I have loved teaching, and I have loved working with students on becoming the best writers they can be. I have loved my research on the intersection of language and science, and I have loved exploring the role that narrative plays in the communication of scientific ideas. But somewhere along the way, I fell in love with editing, too. In fact, editing encompasses all that I have loved; it is a dance, an art, a lesson, and a grand thought experiment, all wrapped up in the written word.

Don’t get me wrong; it isn’t easy. That’s part of the draw for me—I relish the feeling of mucking about in the complexities of a project. But I know it’s hard for writers to invite someone in to do that mucking. That’s why I wanted to share my story. When you hire me, you can trust that my profound respect for writing extends to your writing.

Let’s get started.
